APL & J



Description:APL was developed by IBM in the late 1960s for matrix and array programming. It uses a non-standard character set. J is a version using standard keyboard characters. J is free for students and new users. It includes a debugger, tutorial, project manager, support for comments. A+ is the GNU APL interpreter.

History: APL was invented by Kenneth G. Iverson in 1962, at Harvard University. He subsequently invented "J" as a successor that uses ASCII characters.
Current stable release of A+ is 4.18-8. The current stable release of J is J601a. The most recent source release of A+ is 4.20-2, as of August 29, 2005.

Applications: Most programs act on arrays and matrices, and are often interactive rather than batch.
