BASIC



Description: BASIC is one of the most widely known general purpose languages. It is usually an interpreted language but can be compiled. A version called QBasic (QuickBasic) was available on MS Windows for years, under DOS, but is no longer supported. You can download QBasic from this page.

History: BASIC was invented by John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz in 1964.
Current stable version of XBasic is 6.2.3; stable version of yabasic is 2.730; stable version of ScriptBasic is v1.0build30 .

Applications: BASIC is used to learn programming, to write games, and other non-system tasks.

Script Basic is an extendable, embeddable, scripting language, compiled or interpreted. It is portable across Windows or *nix. Debugging is supported, as is database connection handling, CGI, regular expressions, and more.

Rapid-Q Basic is a version I just found as of 2/15/04, compiled rather than interpreted. There is a Linux version but the author says the Windows version is much more complete. It is mostly compatible with QBasic. The page hasn't been updated since 8/29/2000.
