COBOL

Descriptions: Cobol was first used in the 1960s, and there are still LOTS of Cobol programs kicking around on mainframes. It is a business-oriented language that is compiled and partially self-documenting (commands and source code are usually easy to understand).

In order to run the COBOL versions below, you need to install a Unix-like environment, such as Cygwin. TinyCobol has a Cygwin-specific install version, with instructions.

History: COBOL was designed within a 6 month period in 1959, and the first specification was COBOL 60.
Current standard is COBOL 85.

Applications: Numerous business applications.
