Description: Eiffel is a strongly typed object-oriented language that is maintained by Eiffel Software. There is a free copy of Eiffel available for download, for non-commercial use only.
There is a strong relationship between Eiffel and C.

History: Eiffel was created in 1987 by Bertrand Meyer. Current stable version is 5.3 .

Applications: Eiffel is used to create business-critical applications. Seems mostly oriented towards commercial use.
SmartEiffel also is used to make wrapper libraries for GUI toolkits (GTK+, FOX, Tcl/Tk, and others), Networking and Web libraries, Database interface libraries, and others.

Smart Eiffel is the GNU version of the Eiffel language. It is open source, but needs a UNIX environment to run inside of. Current release is 2.2 .
