Fortran

Description: Fortran is a venerable programming language from the 1950s and 60s, used for scientific computing and numerical analysis. It has been mainly procedural for most of its life but recently has had object-oriented features added.

Fortran is available within Cygwin, as gcc-fortran.

History: Fortran (originally FORTRAN) was developed in the 1950s by John Backus of IBM. The current ANSI standard is Fortran 95.

Applications: I don't know what applications are being written now. Older code is usually ported somehow to run on modern platforms.
