Icon



Description: Icon is a general purpose language developed at the University of Arizona. It is "a high level programming language with extensive facilities for processing strings and structures."

There is also a language called Unicon which is descended from Icon but is developed totally separately, by different people. Unicon includes OOP features, and support for POSIX and OpenGL.

History: Icon is open source; some implementations are in the public domain. Current stable version is 9.3 (Windows), or 9.4 for Unix & Mac. Current stable version of Unicon is 11.1 .

Applications: According to the home page, applications include text analysis & editing, document formatting, expert systems and AI, and data laundry (whatever that is).
