Smalltalk

Description: Smalltalk is an object-oriented language, in fact one of the first. It was created by the team at Xerox PARC in the 1970s.
Smalltalk is available in both commercial and open source versions. Squeak is a version available on Windows. GNU Smalltalk can be used inside Cygwin. Little Smalltalk is available for UNIX (created as a hobby) but does NOT follow the Smalltalk-80 standard. The Squeak homepage has a list on the lefthand side of all versions of Smalltalk they know about.

History: The main language standard is Smalltalk-80. Current stable version is 5.1.4. Squeak's latest version is 3.8 .

Applications: I don't know any practical programs written in Smalltalk yet. I think it is mainly used for teaching or research.
