TeX

Description: TeX is a high-quality typesetting system created by Donald Knuth. LaTeX is the best implementation. It is most often used for medium-to-large sized technical or scientific documents.
LaTex is available on all UNIX platforms and the Macintosh.

LaTeX is available with the Cygwin environment.

History: LaTeX was developed in 1985 by Leslie Lamport and is maintained by the LaTeX3 group.

Applications: The TeX markup language isn't used to write applications but rather to create typeset documents from a text souce. It can be (sort of ) compared to the way that HTML isn't used to make a program but is used to format / arrange layout of a web page.
